Scattered Showers, Cool

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:49:06 GMT

A copy and paste pattern continues as once again as we start the morning off in the 40s, cap afternoon temps in the 50s to near 60, and once again track some scattered showers. While the theme has been similar the last few days, there have been some subtle day to day differences. Once difference I see today is the chance for pop-up showers is early and farther east. That means inside 495, there will be scattered showers midday-afternoon. With that said, it’s not a washout of an afternoon, just an afternoon that features variable conditions that will include breaks of shower, to brief bursts of rain with passing showers. The pattern finally improves tomorrow as a beauty of a day settles in with partly to mostly sunny skies. Temps run in the low to mid 50s along the immediate cost to the low to mid 60s inland. Great for a round of golf or on the little league fields. Saturday starts dry, but the shower chances do increase in the afternoon from southwest to northeast. Those showe...

Predicting the Patriots’ first-round pick feels like a fool’s errand because it often is.But will that stop us from trying? Ha.Welcome to the end of draft season, where the mock drafts, player projections and bold predictions are almost behind us. Almost. In the Herald’s final seveb-round Patriots mock draft, the team adds Clemson edge rusher Myles Murphy at 14th overall. But if Bill Belichick makes a different selection tonight, expect him to work from this list of the five other most likely Patriots first-round picks.Georgia OT Broderick JonesHt/Wt: 6-5, 311A projected top-15 pick, Jones could allow the Patriots to simultaneously address a top need and select the best player available. What could be better than that?Only 21 years old, Jones is arguably the most physically gifted tackle in this class. He is immensely powerful, explosive out of his stance and plays with a mean streak. Scouts describe him as having the feet of a basketball player, making him tough to...

Battenfeld: Democratic Party pols squelch dissent and opponents

The Democratic Party is showing itself to be anything but democratic.U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gloats about “deplatforming” her critics. The Democratic Party says it has no intention of sponsoring any debates with President Biden and his primary opponents.Biden in his announcement video labels all Republicans “MAGA extremists.”And Twitter files revealed Democratic-led efforts to actively censor conservative voices on social media, despite repeated denials from company executives that turned out to be lies. Also on Twitter and other social media, any posts deemed anti-vaccine have been removed by the social media companies. It’s all part of a larger effort by Democrats to silence critics by any means necessary.Ocasio-Cortez sent out a fundraising email this week promoting her efforts to get Fox News’s Tucker Carlson off the air.“Deplatforming works and it is important, and there you go, good things can happen,” she said of Carlson’s firing. Not only that, AOC says she plans to ...

ASK IRA: And those who doubted the Heat are where now?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:49:06 GMT

Q: On behalf of Heat Nation, who all wanted the Heat to not make the playoffs because we had no shot at beating the Bucks . . . we all apologize. Come on now, with Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo out, Bam Adebayo hobbled, who could have predicted this? Jimmy Butler was simply amazing but everyone played their butts off. – Brian, Fort Lauderdale.A: It is now 3 a.m. as I sit here, annoyingly typing while someone is trying to sleep in the hotel room next door, spending another night with my friend, Blue Moon, and I’m still having trouble processing both what happened both tonight and in this series. It seems like between Giannis Antetokounmpo, Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo, this was nothing but a week of writing about injuries. And in the last two games, I had deadline stories fully written about the Heat going down big in the fourth quarter and their season approaching the finish line. Even as Wednesday night turns to Thursday morning, I’m still not sure how the Buck...

Five questions that could shape the Ravens’ 2023 draft

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:49:06 GMT

Few teams draft better than the Ravens.Since 2000, only the New England Patriots (17) have selected more players than Baltimore (16) who have gone on to be named first-team All-Pro. In the past five years, the Ravens are also the only team to have drafted an eventual NFL Most Valuable Player, which quarterback Lamar Jackson was in 2019.Other notable players the Ravens have drafted in the past five years include All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews and four-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr., both in the third round in 2018; All-Pro kick returner and wide receiver Devin Duvernay in the third round in 2020; and emerging linebacker Patrick Queen in the first round in 2020.There have been plenty of other contributors, too. A pair of 2022 first-round picks, safety Kyle Hamilton and center Tyler Linderbaum, were among the league’s best rookies. J.K. Dobbins, drafted in the second round in 2020, rushed for nine touchdowns and led all NFL running backs ...

Powerful new obesity drug poised to upend weight loss care

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:49:06 GMT

As a growing number of overweight Americans clamor for Ozempic and Wegovy — drugs touted by celebrities and on TikTok to pare pounds — an even more powerful obesity medicine is poised to upend treatment.Tirzepatide, an Eli Lilly and Co. drug approved to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand name Mounjaro, helped people with the disease who were overweight or had obesity lose up to 16% of their body weight, or more than 34 pounds, over nearly 17 months, the company said on Thursday. The late-stage study of the drug for weight loss adds to earlier evidence that similar participants without diabetes lost up to 22% of their body weight over that period with weekly injections of the drug. For a typical patient on the highest dose, that meant shedding more than 50 pounds.Having diabetes makes it notoriously difficult to lose weight, said Dr. Nadia Ahmad, Lilly’s medical director of obesity clinical development, which means the recent results are especially significant. “We have not seen t...

ABOARD BRP MALABRIGO (AP) — A Chinese coast guard ship blocked a Philippine patrol vessel steaming into a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, causing a frightening near-collision in the latest act of Beijing’s aggression in the strategic waterway. The high seas face-off Sunday between the larger Chinese ship and the Philippine coast guard’s BRP Malapascua near the Second Thomas Shoal was among the tense moments it and another Philippine vessel encountered in a weeklong sovereignty patrol in one of the world’s most hotly contested waterways. The Philippine coast guard had invited a small group of journalists, including three from The Associated Press, to join the 1,670-kilometer (1,038-mile) patrol for the first time as part of a new Philippine strategy aimed at exposing China’s increasingly aggressive actions in the South China Sea, where an estimated $5 trillion in global trade transits each year.In scorching summer heat but relatively calm waters, the Malapascua and another Phili...
