BY JANIE HAR | Associated PressSAN FRANCISCO — The criminal case against a former UC Davis student accused of several stabbings is on hold after prosecutors agreed that he is incompetent to stand trial for charges related to the attacks, which killed two people, wounded a third and terrorized a peaceful college town. The judge dismissed jurors in Carlos Dominguez’s competency trial Monday, which would have been the fifth day of testimony, after county prosecutors informed the court last week they no longer planned to fight the defense by Dominguez’s attorney that he was not mentally fit for trial.A determination of incompetency means Dominguez cannot currently understand court proceedings, assist his attorney in his defense and understand his own status in the criminal proceeding.Yolo Superior Court Judge Samuel McAdam last week ordered the defendant to receive medication over Dominguez’s objections, ruling he was a danger to himself and others without it. Back-to-school reminders on driving safely around buses, school zones: Roadshow

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:20:29 GMT

Q: With students returning to schools, it might be a good idea to remind drivers what the various lights and stop signs mean on school buses. So many drivers don’t seem to pay attention to them. This puts our little ones in danger of possibly getting hit by distracted and ignorant drivers.Don Cole, Campbell A: An excellent reminder. Drivers need to remember to drive patiently, slowly, and attentively around school zones and school buses. The speed limit is 25 mph, or lower where posted, within 500 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing the street. When near schools, watch out for bicycles, pedestrians, school buses and cars whose drivers are inattentive. As for school buses, flashing yellow lights on a school bus warn drivers to slow down and prepare to stop. With a few exceptions, California law requires drivers to stop in both directions when the red lights on a school bus are flashing. Drivers must remain stopped until those red lights are turned off.Accordin...

LONDON (AP) — Throngs of fans lined the streets of Sinéad O’Connor’s former hometown in Ireland to bid farewell to the gifted singer as her funeral procession passed by Tuesday following a private memorial service.A vintage VW camper van with rooftop speakers blasting Bob Marley’s song “Natural Mystic” led a hearse at walking pace through a thick crowd of admirers along the waterfront in Bray. O’Connor said she loved Marley’s music.Devotees of O’Connor’s singing and those touched by her sometimes-troubled life tossed roses and other flowers on the hearse. A group that had been waiting for well over an hour outside O’Connor’s former home, singing her songs at times, began to clap as four police officers on motorcycles leading the cortege approached and the procession came to a halt. They snapped photos through the windows of the hearse where her coffin was dwarfed by a pile of blue hydrangeas and pink roses. Ruth O’Shea, who had come to the c...

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Jamaica’s Women’s World Cup run might be over for now, but the team’s fight for support back home continues. The Reggae Girlz became the first Caribbean nation to reach the knockout round, advancing in just their second appearance. The campaign came to an end on Tuesday night when Jamaica fell to Colombia 1-0 in Melbourne. Catalina Usme’s goal was the only one that the Reggae Girlz conceded over the course of the tournament. “We’ve put ourselves on the map and we’ve showed what we can actually do,” goalkeeper Becky Spencer said. “I think with more funding and more resources, it just shows you what kind of team that we’ve got and we can on...

D.C.’s Democratic Party is suing the District and its Board of Elections over a ballot initiative that could change how primary and general elections work. The lawsuit centers on the “Make All Votes Count Act” which, if approved by voters, would bring open primaries to D.C. and also allow for ranked choice voting. With ranked choice voting, a voter ranks the candidates in order of preference, rather than selecting just one. If a candidate with a clear majority of the votes doesn’t emerge, the last place candidate would be removed from contention and those who voted for them would see their second-place choice count. The measure recently earned approval from the Board of Elections to move forward in the process, which could end with it on D.C. voters’ ballots. In court filings, the D.C. Democratic Party claims the BOE is “not authorized to approve this Initiative, and the process of voting in local elections in Washington, D.C. cannot be changed through an Initiative.”According to ...
