Roster decisions loom as the Chicago White Sox choose between ‘a lot of guys that do a lot of really good things’ When constructing a bench, Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol keeps in mind a conversation he had in Kansas City, Mo., while the Royals coaching staff constructed their playoff roster.“We’d go back and forth and we’d go through everything, and finally somebody said, ‘Look, there’s no perfect team,’ ” Grifol said Saturday morning.Grifol spent the previous 10 seasons on the Royals staff — they reached the World Series in 2014 and won it the next season — before the Sox hired him in November.“We’ve just got to pick the guys we think are going to mesh together and give us the most versatility and coverage in things we think are important,” Grifol said. “But to try to cover everything is almost impossible.”That type of conversation is where the Sox find themselves as the final day of camp nears and with Thursday’s season opener against the Astros in Houston on the horizon. Trump, facing potential indictment, holds defiant Waco rally By JILL COLVIN and MICHELLE L. PRICE (Associated Press)WACO, Texas (AP) — Facing a potential indictment, Donald Trump took a defiant stance at a rally Saturday in Waco, disparaging the prosecutors investigating him and predicting his vindication as he rallied supporters in a city made famous by deadly resistance against law enforcement. With a hand over his heart, Trump stood at attention when his rally opened with a song called “Justice for All” performed by a choir of people imprisoned for their roles in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Some footage from the insurrection was shown on big screens displayed at the rally site as the choir sang the national anthem and a recording played of Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The extraordinary display opened Trump’s first rally of his 2024 Republican presidential campaign. He then launched into a speech brimming with resentments and framed the probes, including a New York grand jury investigation,...

Guregian: PHOENIX — Bill Belichick, who hasn’t fielded questions from the media since his season-ending presser in January, will be on the hot seat early Monday morning with the AFC coaches breakfast on tap at the Arizona Biltmore. As always, there will be plenty to ask the Patriots head coach at this annual gathering during the league meetings. A lot has happened in the two months since the Patriots season ended with an 8-9 record and third place finish in the AFC East. For starters, Belichick hired Bill O’Brien to be his offensive coordinator, and Adrian Klemm to coach the offensive line, presumably to clean up the mess left from last season. So Matt Patricia was canned as the play caller and offensive line coach, and no longer appears to be with the team. However, Joe Judge, last year’s quarterbacks coach, remains as an assistant head coach.Belichick has also made some moves in free agency, most notably adding JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Gesicki and James Robinson on the offensive side of the b...

Sharks takeaways: Avoiding the ‘Q’ word, Karlsson chases 100, and Knyzhov’s contract twist

Sharks takeaways: Avoiding the ‘Q’ word, Karlsson chases 100, and Knyzhov’s contract twist From the San Jose Sharks’ perspective, there was nowhere to go but up after they were throttled by the Vancouver Canucks earlier this week. Now as they return to San Jose, that’s also true from an NHL standings standpoint. The Sharks had a one-goal lead in the second period Saturday but allowed three straight to the Calgary Flames in what became a 5-3 loss at the Saddledome, marking San Jose’s ninth consecutive defeat as it ended a three-game road trip.Logan Couture, Nico Sturm, and Martin Kaut all scored and Erik Karlsson had two assists as the Sharks fell to 19-39-15, with their .363 points percentage ranking as the worst in the NHL.Still, Saturday’s performance was markedly better than the one they gave Thursday when the Sharks barely showed up in what became a 7-2 loss to the Canucks.“What we talked about (Friday) is you can’t quit,” Sharks coach David Quinn said after Saturday’s game. “That’s probably the biggest insult you can any athlete. We’ve got to continue to pl...
